What To Know About Etiquette in Barbados

By Terra Luxury on 05 Nov, 2021

Despite how lively Barbados often becomes, the culture on the island is surprisingly relaxed. This does not mean that anything goes, however. Let’s discuss what you need to know about etiquette in Barbados before your visit.

The Importance of Dress

Barbados has strong Christian roots, and in part, this religious history influences the conviction of islanders today. Your chosen outfit is expected to reflect the setting you are currently in, and conservative attire is always appreciated.

Unlike California’s Venice Beach, bikinis and swim trunks shouldn’t follow you off the sand in Barbados. While casual wear is allowed, swimming outfits are not appreciated in towns or shopping centers. It’s also important to note that topless or nude sunbathing are both illegal.

When conducting business or entering formal settings, a shirt and pants are expected. Women should wear a skirt or pants suit. This formal attire is especially necessary at a Barbadian bank.

A Proper, Polite Greeting

You could accidentally disrespect Bajan residents by messing up proper greeting etiquette. If you step into a room where others are waiting, greet them with a simple “Good morning/afternoon/evening.” When meeting new people for the first time, don’t wait for others to introduce you. Instead, introduce yourself and offer a handshake as a greeting. Though you may see residents hugging and kissing each other as a greeting, this act is reserved for close friends and family.

Calm and Casual Are King

Barbados is known in part for its laidback residents. As a visitor, it’s important to maintain the casual atmosphere. Discussing politics, insulting others, and staring at strangers are all considered impolite. Be considerate of others as they go through their day and always de-escalate first. Residents are accustomed to foreigners and are understanding of mistakes, though apologies go a long way on the island.

How To Tip at Restaurants

The final piece of what to know about etiquette in Barbados is small but important. In some restaurants, you may notice an already-added gratuity. Whether this gratuity is present or not, you can still tip higher if you believe it was earned. Many establishments split these tips, so if you wish to tip one server alone, do so quickly and discreetly.
