I had the absolutely pleasure of meeting my client who managed to venture down to Barbados on the Welcome Stamp at the end of last year with her family from NYC. We met for a late lunch at one of her favourite new spots on the west coast, La Cabane. We enjoyed some great food (& cocktails), whilst chatting about her experience so far!

After leaving Barbados to travel to the UK for the summer to visit family, I realized quite quickly how different the two places operated.

If the walls of The Mews restaurant could talk, we would have to put a gag order on them. This iconic restaurant on 2^nd Street Holetown has been around for the past 3 decades, serving up the best libations, food and merriment that the west coast has to offer. I sat down with Chris Hoad this past weekend to talk about his restaurant, and to find out what he has been doing as it is certainly business unusual right now.

Barbados reopened its doors for commercial airlift on Sunday, July 12^th. The very first airline to touch down again on our shores was an Air Canada flight from Toronto. In line with COVID 19 regulations, the government of Barbados has placed strict measures to protect the health and safety of its citizens and visitors.

In June with most of the Caribbean economies reopening for business, we surveyed over 500 office workers across Barbados, Grenada, St. Lucia and Trinidad to better understand attitudes towards Working From Home (WFH). 

I had the pleasure to sit down and have a chat with a British couple who were holidaying in Barbados for a month and decided to extend their trip to ride out Covid-19 in Barbados. Here is the story of their love for Barbados and how lockdown on island has been for them.

During this uncertain time it was even more important than usual to keep our sellers updated and buyers informed.  Property viewings have been mostly by video and thankfully we already had videos of many of our listings – video viewings have worked well for us.    It has been a very interesting time and it has been busy though offers are lower than usual.

Since mid-March Barbados has been home to about a dozen luxury cruise liners following the suspension of operations of all cruise lines due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It’s 2020! I always start the year with reflecting (not looking back… because the only time to do that is when you are reversing) on achievements and then use that to frame my mind on what I want for myself and my team.

What a year 2019 was! Some may say it wasn’t great but I think it’s where your mindset was. I saw growth; growth with my team, stronger bonds and in turn more sales due to cooperation and with the known fact that two heads (or sometimes 21 heads) are better than one.

Real Estate is complex, and for that reason, clients require the property valuation experts to provide Market Valuation reports for their various purposes. The interest you hold in a property heavily influences your perception of the property’s value. During this recessionary period it has been particularly challenging reconciling market reality with perceptions, given the general fall-off in market prices.

Living a stone’s throw away from pristine white sand beaches and any-time ocean dips is a luxury almost everyone craves. After all, let’s face it; with one look at those turquoise Caribbean Sea views, it’s hard not to sink into relaxation mode. Luckily in Barbados, we’re spoilt with an endless selection of beaches from the more tucked-away spots ideal for seclusion to the activity-packed shores bursting with family fun.

In February 1961 and with just 52 rooms, the Sandy Lane Hotel opened its doors to welcome its first guests. The establishment of the hotel was the brainchild of Sir Ronald Tree, a British politician who built a magnificent Palladian home on 20 acres on the West Coast known as Heron Bay. Cognisant of the burgeoning travel numbers to the Caribbean enabled by the jet age, Sir Ronald was concerned that his beloved Heron Bay would soon be surrounded by flashy resorts and middle-income retirees. His vision was to pre-empt this by establishing a luxury hotel and community with a golf course, and he determined that the Sandy Lane sugar plantation was the ideal location. Permission was sought from then Prime Minister Sir Grantley Adams to convert the estate out of sugar production into a building estate and to relocate the main highway that ran directly through what eventually became the main restaurant and bar. With financing arranged out of the UK, Sir Ronald and his colleagues (including names like Rothschild and Kindersley) formed the development company West Coast Limited. They purchased the estate from the Barbados Shipping & Trading and the hotel broke ground in mid-1958.

The six-year period leading up to the peak of the market in 2006 is widely regarded as a period of unprecedented growth in the Barbados market. This boom period saw compound annual growth in some market segments of 12% and staggering prices being achieved for property in some areas of the West Coast. The reality is that this growth cycle paled in comparison with the island’s first property boom, which occurred much earlier in our history.
